Scoring System

The United States Karaoke Association (and, by extension, USKA Oregon) follows the guidelines of the International Karaoke Federation (IKF) International Scoring System:

  1. Technical Score (50% of Overall Score):

    • Pitch Accuracy: The ability to hit and maintain accurate pitch throughout a performance.

    • Rhythm and Timing: The ability to stay on beat and maintain a consistent tempo.

    • Vocal Range and Control: Including range, dynamics and the ability to control their voice across various registers.

    • Articulation and Diction: The ability to enunciate words and phrases.

    • Resonance and Tone Quality: The ability to produce a clear tone and rich vocal timbre.

  2. Artistic Score (50% of Overall Score):

    • Interpretation and Expression: The ability to convey emotion and connect with the audience throughout a performance.

    • Stage Presence and Charisma: The confidence, poise, and engagement of a singer with the audience throughout a performance.

    • Creativity and Originality: The ability to produce a unique and innovative approach to a performance.

    • Musicality and Phrasing: The ability to interpret the original music (Including: dynamics, phrasing and musical nuances).

    • Emotional Impact: The overall emotional impact and effectiveness of a singer’s performance as it relates to convey the intended message or mood.

  3. Points Awarded:

    • Both categories (i.e., technical and artistic) are scored separately out of 50 points, adding up to a total of 100 possible points scored.

    • Judges assign scores based on the quality of the performance relative to established criteria.

    • Judges can assign whole or half points for more precise evaluation.

    • Judges will use the ISS scale to determine scoring:

    • Judges should provide constructive feedback with scores to help singers understand particular areas for improvement.

  4. Judging Criteria:

    • Judges should have expertise in vocal performance and music so that they may effectively evaluate technical and artistic aspects of a performer.

    • Consistency among judges is crucial, so calibration sessions and clear guidelines should be provided for each judge before a competition.

    • Judges should assess each performance impartially, focusing solely on the competitor’s performance, rather than external factors.

  5. Transparency and Fairness:

    • Scores should be tabulated openly and made available to competitors and the audience.

    • Any discrepancies or concerns regarding judging should be addressed promptly and transparently.

    • Competition organizers should ensure fairness by providing equal opportunities and resources to all participants.

By adhering to these guidelines, the IKF International Scoring System aims to provide a comprehensive, fair and transparent evaluation of competitors’ performances.
